Hill country in Sri Lanka is approximately within the limits alone 2000 feet offer a wholesome cool climate. Sri Lanka’s centrally located Hill country is an area of astonishing contrasts and spectacular scenery. It offers a relaxed journey through lush country on foot, or care to view ever more plunging waterfalls, broad valleys and hillside tea plantations.
Picturesque waterfalls cascading down the mountain slopes enhance the beauty of the hill country. The geographical formation of the Island with the central highland sloping down to the coastal plains has resulted in a number of rivers and streams starting from the central region flowing down the hilly slopes in a radial pattern, creating charming waterfalls in numerous places in the hill country. Road leading to this mystic mountains winds through miles and miles of 'green carpet' of tea bushes where tea pluckers are seen busily picking the ‘world best tea leaves' that go to form the most popular brew in the world, the 'Ceylon Tea'.
Roads to hill country are full of roadside stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables grown in village home gardens. On your way you can break for a hot cup of up-country tea at several cafes and Tea centers along the way where different grades of tea can also be purchased.
Center town in hill country “Nuwara Eliya” really comes alive in April for the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year. These few weeks during month of April Colombo’s resident gather to the hill country and Main attractions during this season includes horse races, motor cross rallies, golf competitions, flower exhibitions, concerts and revelry late into the night. |
